Top 5 Tips for Celebrating Women’s Health & Fitness Day

Sep 30, 2020 | All, Goal Setting, Healthy Eating

Today is Women’s Health and Fitness Day! This annual celebration encourages women to focus on their own health by encouraging physical activity and health awareness. As a mother myself, it can be very challenging to take the time to focus on yourself and your own health goals. In honor of today, here are my top 5 tips to stay on top of your health goals:

1) Schedule a Well Check with Your Doctor
If you haven’t scheduled a doctor’s visit in awhile, now is a great time to do that. Many doctors’ offices are doing virtual visits, so you don’t have to put yourself at risk to get a check-up.

2) Book your workouts in your Calendar
Schedule your workouts in your calendar so you give yourself the time and space to get physically active. If you are a morning person, lay your clothes out the night before and get all of your other gear (water bottles, headlamps, etc.) ready so you have no excuse to hit the snooze button.

3) Keep Track of your Preventative Wellness Exams
Keep track of when your last pap smear, mammogram and/or colonoscopy exam was completed. Mark your calendar when to ask your doctor for your next women. According to the Mayo Clinic, women should start getting annual mammograms at 40 years of age. Pap smears should start at age 25 and be done every 3 years, and colonoscopy exams should start at age 50, and possibly earlier for those individuals at a higher risk of developing colorectal cancer.

4) Incorporate a New Fruit or Vegetable Weekly
Fruits and vegetables are a fantastic source of fiber, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. Expand your palette by incorporating either a new seasonal fruit or vegetable every week, or preparing an old fruit or vegetable differently. It’s important to eat a variety of colors and food to keep your gut healthy and micronutrients balanced. If you have kids or a significant other, introducing new foods can help expand their food options as well.

5) Take Some “ME” Time Daily
Setting aside alone time to just breathe and reflect can help recenter your body and mind, especially if you are a mother constantly worrying about everyone else in your family. Schedule time in your calendar to meditate, sit outside, or take a short walk. This will help reduce stress and sharpen your focus for the remainder of the day.
